Finished: Zebra Crossing quilted zipper bag

Today, I present to you the fourth zipper bag finish since I decided to reach my average number of zipper pouches made per year. This one is called Zebra Crossing / Suojatie, and if you read on, you will learn why.

This is the main side of the Zebra Crossing pouch:
See how light-hearted it looks somehow! At the time of the photo shoot, this path was the only spot in our garden that caught any sun. Happily, the autumn leaves on the path matched the colour of the zipper bag.

Going back in time a bit. These are my mindlessly sewn, scrappy blocks that I sewed as an interim project – and you can probably spot a few that eventually became part of the Zebra Crossing pouch:
Somehow, I’m not completely satisfied with this set because so many of them look a little glum. I suspect that several of these – since they do not really meet my visual requirements – will be end up as a bottom part of a future zipper pouch.

And that is the silver lining in my slightly disappointing results. The visually less pleasing blocks will be easier for me to use for the bottom part. I tend to avoid using my prettier scraps there because they will be out of sight, and sometimes it takes me a while to locate scraps that are expendable enough.

The less than satisfying batch included a few nice blocks though, and I sewed a few more, somewhat less mindlessly. They made for a pair of decent-looking zipper bag panels even though the lack of contrast on the upper one bothers me a little:
Again, I chose one of my go-to quilting patterns, the intersecting arcs. It is a bit easier to stitch than my other favourite, the spiral. Perhaps I’ll move out of my comfort zone for the next zipper bag and choose a different quilting pattern. I can always see if my summary post of 21 easy quilting ideas inspires me!

Enough of the process: let’s jump back to the sunny autumn day and see what the other side of the Zebra Crossing zipper bag looks like:
Zebra Crossing is one of the Open series of zipper bags and its measurements are as follows:
  • Width at the top: 26 cm (around 10-1/4")
  • Height: 16,5 cm (around 6-1/2")
  • Depth on the bottom: 6 cm (around 2-1/2")
Look closely, and you will see the cute zebra in upper right hand corner – that is where I got the idea for the name.
The Zebra Crossing zipper bag got a cute lining. This time, I didn’t cut two identical lining panels. Instead, I added a scrappy strip and an almost solid strip to one of the panels. I like how that small bit of extra effort makes the lining look designed:
A black zipper looked like the best match for the panels. I followed my usual process and sewed a hexagon-shaped tab for the zipper end, thinking happily that it would be a breeze to sew in.

And only then did I realise that the zipper I’d picked was a little sturdier – and wider – than my usual ones. The hexagon was too small! So I had to make a rectangular tab instead.

One more photo of the flip side of this zipper bag:
