First make of the year: Quiddity zipper bag
If you’ve been following my work for a while, you’ll know that I like to share my own quilted makes in Tilkunviilaaja’s Instagram. It’s a pleasure to share more details of their stories here as well.
The most recent finish is a zipper bag which I named Quiddity (or Olemus in Finnish). It is also the first zipper pouch that I’ve sewn this year. A milestone! I put together the surfaces quickly, to have a project for an upcoming quilting day with friends whom I first got to know in social media – through their blogs or Instagram accounts. And because I wanted a quick make, I just took whatever fabrics that I found on or at arm’s length from my sewing table and made “scrap-in-a-box” squares.
The squares end up being of different sizes, but I trim them so that several of them are of the same width or length. Then they can be sewn together as columns (or as rows), to make a surface that is of suitable size for a zipper bag.
I’ll have to share an image of another project to show you what I mean because my process this time was so quick that I didn’t stop to take any pictures. Here’s a process photo from the quilting day. I’ve just reached one of my favourite parts of sewing a zipper bag. When the seams have been sewn, it is exciting to see the real shape that the bag will be! In addition, sometimes the space through which one has to turn the quilted bag is small, and then it is not only exciting to see the shape, but exhilarating because one succeeded to get it the right way out!
This is another progress shot where the zipper bag is waiting for me to run a stitch around the zipper opening. I like to use pins, not clips to hold the pieces just right. It took a few days to get the opportunity to shoot a few photos outside where there is more light. No sun, though, but snow. Here you can see the other side of the Quiddity zipper bag perched on a trellis which is enjoying its winter slumber. I tend to like one side of each pouch more, and this one is my favourite for Quiddity. Quiddity is one of my Open series zipper bags, and it is of the following size:
Here’s a closeup of the Baptist Fan like – but easier – quilting pattern that requires no free-motion. This is one of the 21 quilting pattern ideas that I shared in an earlier post. My whole reason for making the Quiddity zipper bag was to have suitable surfaces for this quilting pattern. I wrote the original post about the 21 patterns in Finnish in 2021, and nobody – including me – noticed that it was missing the number four idea from the list!
How funny/strange is that?! I would probably never have known that my list of 21 patterns was one short if I hadn't made the English version. Happy quilting!
